Well, apparently I have succumbed to the sickness that my children have been sharing for the last several weeks. It started on Christmas Eve, but I figured I was just exhausted from all the activity and lack of sleep. As it turns out, I must have been brewing something. I have been sporting a low grade fever (highest was 100.9) and a cough that sounds like I'm dying! As a matter of fact, it's one of those coughs that make you dizzy.
I went to work today, against my better judgement. Ended up coming home around lunch time. I've slept on and off all afternoon. Had some soup for dinner and I've been laying around since. I don't feel good...but I can't really pin point what the problem is. Just general uckiness.
I have lots to share with you about our Christmas! Lots to say, and lots of pictures to show you. I promise to get this done as soon as I have some energy. BTW, my laptop died...so I've been using Dan's for the last several days. It's a pain to access my email and impossible to access my pictures. Hopefully, things will be back to normal soon.
In the meantime, I wish you and yours a very Happy New Year!

Mono 101
I have definitely had an education this week! I've learned some things that I never really wanted to know! Just like most everyone I know, I grew up thinking of mononucleosis as the "kissing disease". I literally thought that you got mono anytime you kissed someone who was not your husband! How naive I was. I know for sure that Nathan has not kissed anyone but me...so far! He still ended up with this dreadful virus....and it's worse than anything we've experienced before! Here are some of the things I NOW know about mono.....
1. Your body cooks it for a long time before you actually have symptoms! They tell me it's been percolating in his system for 30-50 days! During this time, Nathan was exposed to a ton of other crud (pneumonia, strep, gastroenteritis...etc....). This means that he very well could have mono AND something else. This is just disturbing to me!
2. His doctor said that the most likely culprit for acquiring this awful thing is.....drum roll please......the drinking fountain at school. Apparently, kids are not very good at avoiding the water spout itself! This....is just gross! Please send your kids bottled water to school...or a few bucks to buy a bottle here and there! Allowing them to rely on the drinking fountains is just asking for trouble.
3. The symptoms of mono mimics the symptoms of strep throat and consequently, many people are misdiagnosed. It's sad to think that you could be taking an antibiotic needlessly (heellllooooo, isn't that rampant these days?) , especially since there really is no way to "get rid" of mono. It is self limiting and must just run it's course.
4. While we had some symptoms resolving....there were others waiting just around the corner to jump out at you. For example. His first symptom was a very sore throat. About the time that was starting to ease up...he was slung with a heavy duty fever (>102). The fever started to go away after about 5 days into it...and then he developed a pretty nasty cough. He was coughing so hard, his left eyeball was all red from the blood vessels breaking. When his cough had slowed down some....he got hives! HUGE HIVES ALL OVER HIS BODY! They were itchy and uncomfortable. Benadryl worked for about 3 hours and then the hives would return.
5. Hives are pretty much gone now, but today, he had some wheezing and breathing problems. I brought him into the doctor today and she immediately gave him two breathing treatments. She said his pulse ox was low and that if it didn't improve after the treatment, we needed to go to the emergency room! This scared me to death! After his exam today, we find that the HIVES have resolved but he now has an ear infection and has completely lost his appetite! They sent him for some lab work and a chest xray! Thankfully, there is no pneumonia!
6. If you were not a crazy nut before for your child gets mono, you will definitely become one after about one week of this awful, awful disease.
7. Most of the annoying symptoms will eventually resolve...but the fatigue can last for up to two months!
8. Even when you are all better and feeling great....you can still pass this one on to your friends for about 18 months!
9. It's a very expensive disease....$25 co pays each for two doctor visits....$69 for the chest xray (incorrectly processed....our xrays should be covered at 100%...but I'm going to have to fight with my HR department to resolve this one).....$85 for prescriptions and about $30 for over the counter meds. In addition, there is a rental cost for the nebulizer machine but I'm not sure how much that will be yet.
10. Even though a child with mono might technically "look" like they are OK...chances are....they are NOT ready to try doing homework. When their face is pale and his eyes look a little sunken in...that's your clue to NOT force the math issue.
11. Last year, when we homeschooled the kids.....we had ZERO, NADA, ZILCHO illnesses! So far this year...it's been a disaster.
12. When you are paying a ton of attention to your really sick son....your daughters will feel jealous and will begin to act out....like writing on the wall and throwing a Dora chair at her sister.
13. Your laundry won't get done.
Add a near fatal car accident where your mother-in-laws arms are broken....and you have yourself a situation that could involve a straight jacket.....or lots of alcohol.....maybe both!
Please pray for my poor Nathan as he recovers from this awful, awful virus!
Thanks!

Welcome, 2011!
Happy New Year! Is it just me or did this year go by really, really fast? Honestly, I don't feel ready for it to be January 2nd. I've already spent about 2 hours preparing for school to start tomorrow morning! I printed off a really nice prayer in honor of The Most Holy Name of Jesus which is celebrated tomorrow. We'll pray the prayer and then use it for some copy work.....I thought it would be good to use as a "warm up" to get them back in the swing of things.
We got a call from one of the basketball coaches at our parish school tonight. Apparently, they are one kid short for one of the teams and he wanted to know if Nathan would be interested in playing. We made the decision to go ahead and say yes, even though he just finished up with soccer. One of the reasons is that we really LOVE this coach and I was so touched that he wanted Nathan on his team! The practices are reasonable...just once a week and the games are all on Saturdays.
During this Christmas break, I've learned that two of my elementary school classmates have been diagnosed with cancer. One with testicular cancer and another with stage 4 Melanoma (brain tumor). When does this ever end? It seems that every time I turn around, I hear of someone else who has been stricken with this disease. It's heart wrenching! In addition to all of that, my nephew is back in the hospital again. He is suffering with ulcerative colitis/Crohns disease. I can't even keep count of how many flare ups he's had in the last year. I would say that this is at least his 4th hospitalization in the past 12 months! Please keep him in your prayers.
There is also another very close family member that is suffering with fibromyalgia. Recently, her doctors have decided to do some additional testing as her symptoms seem to be more indicative of M.S. She will undergo a spinal tap sometime in the next 2 weeks. Apparently this will be the deciding factor in her diagnosis. I also ask that you would keep her in your prayers as well!
We managed to get all of our Christmas decorations down and put away this afternoon. This was bittersweet for me. I have a love/hate relationship with holiday decorations! The living room looks so bare now! However, if 2011 is anything like 2010, Christmas will be here again before we know it!
Well, that's my quick update for now. It shouldn't be too long before I'm back into the routine again.
What's been going on in your neck of the woods?

Prayers please!
I'm asking for your prayers for my little Olivia! She is having surgery tomorrow morning (Monday, the 22nd)! She's having her tonsils and adenoids removed...as well as having tubes placed in both ears. Her surgery is scheduled for 11am (EST).
Today, I took her shopping for Popsicles, jello, pudding and some ice cream. I let her pick out her favorite flavors! She's excited that she will get to camp out on the couch in the living room for a few days. I'm hoping that she does not have a bad reaction to the anesthesia and that we can keep her pain controlled. They say that the first two or three days are the worst.
If you have enough time, please sneak in a prayer for me too.....I'm so nervous that I could crawl out of my own skin. As much as I hate surgery, I wish I could do this for her so she wouldn't have to endure it. But...she's only four and I'm told that the younger they are...the easier it is.
Thanks!

This & That

I've got both girls home with me today. Olivia has an appointment with an ENT. She's had 5 ear infections in the last 15 months, including an eardrum rupture about a month ago. In addition, she snores like a .....like a.......like....her grandfather (my dad)! Growing up, our entire neighborhood knew when my dad had gone to bed! Anyway, they are going to do a hearing test and then take a look at her tonsils. I don't really want her to have to endure surgery at four years old.
Amelia lost her voice yesterday. She says her throat doesn't hurt...but for the last 3 nights, she's awakened with a terrible headache that she states makes her eyes hurt. I figure it's time to have them both looked at....again.
Tonight is my second weigh in for Weight Watchers! I'm exited! I think I've done relatively well! I'm determined, even more so than last week! I'm trying to keep focused. So far, so good. My immediate goal is to lose about 28-30 pounds by the end of April. I think I can do it. I need to exercise more! I will talk more about that later...because I read a book once that gave me an
excellent idea about how to get fit and grow closer to God at the same time! I'm re-reading this book right now and will write a post on it as soon as I can.
Have a great Thursday, everybody!!!

House of Germs!

We can't seen to get rid of the crud! For almost 5 months now, we've been passing this little sucker back and forth amongst ourselves. Some of us have ended up with the flu, some with an ear infection and some of us with strep. Amelia started getting sick on Christmas Eve. As a matter of fact, we didn't go to mass as a family on Christmas. Dan stayed home with Amelia and I took the other kids. By Christmas Day, she was feeling better.....but the cough started. While Olivia is still dealing with a lingering ear infection, Amelia now has bronchitis. To top it all off, I have a cold! You know the kind....you can't breathe, you can't taste or smell....the kind that makes you use several boxes of Kleenex in one day....and the kind that sends your husband back to the drugstore for more cough drops because you've gone through a whole bag in 3 days!
I've read where Saint Cornelius and Saint Polycarp are good for earaches. Does anyone know of a Patron Saint for clogged sinuses?

Update!!
Thank you all for your prayers. Ethan is doing somewhat better! On Friday, they did a scope (both ends) and they think they found Ulcerative Colitis. They did a biopsy on one of the ulcers but we won't have those results until sometime tomorrow. The doctor thought that there is still a chance that it's Crohn's Disease. He has been receiving IV fluids and has perked up considerably since then!

2nd Week of Advent
We have been moving very slowly at our house lately (Thank you, Barbara & Judy!). Although we've had a lot to do, we've tried not to tire ourselves out by doing it all at once! For instance, we bought our tree the day after Thanksgiving. It lived in our backyard for two days, until we had time to bring it inside. Then, to slow things down even further, we didn't decorate it at all for over a week! We just let it deliver that glorious smell that I love so much! We finally got around to putting the lights and decorations on it this past Sunday.

We had our annual St. Nicholas/gingerbread decorating party over the weekend! It is always a real hit with the kids! We start off by praying the Rosary, which moves right into the potluck and then the decorating. This year, my kids barely had the gingerbread house decorated when they began eating it! The good news....I don't have that sugar-filled, gloppy, messy, sticky thing hanging around until I have to throw it away!
Sunday night, we were treated to a call from the North Pole! Santa called to talk with each of the kids. I think Nathan was the most excited of all of them! If you're interested in having Santa call your children, you can make those arrangements at http://www.santaspeaks.com/!
We don't have a lot going on this week....except Olivia is home from school today (and I'm home from work) with an earache. I can't call the doctor until 8:30am. We just can't seem to get well around here. I'm starting to tire of the constant co-pays, the antibiotics, the making up homework issue...and.....I guess knowing there are little germs living in this house that I can't seem to get rid of! Waaa, waaaa, waaaa....whine, whine, whine!
As I look back over the last year...I'm amazed that it's gone by so quickly! At this time last year, I had just finished my last chemo and was walking around....bald! I have much to be thankful for this year...and although it might not seem like it, I am extremely thankful to God for my health, for my husband and children, for my job and health care! We have a roof over our heads and food in the pantry. I am also thankful that we can afford medicine when we are sick!
So, as we celebrate this beautiful Feast of the Immaculate Conception, let us be ever more thankful to God and to our Blessed Mother for all that we have.

St. Nicholas visited our house on Saturday night! He always brings new Christmas pajamas and some chocolate gold coins! Here is a photo of the kids in there new pj's....

Swine Flu update!
Well, Nathan says he feels better today! To tell you the truth, he doesn't look much better. The fever has been better controlled and he's fighting with his sisters. Those are good signs...I think.
Interestingly enough, my employer has pretty strict rules with regards to communicable diseases. I can't go back to work until it has been 7 days since first exposure (in this case....Saturday would be the soonest), or, I have to be taking Tamiflu. I called both my oncologist and my regular doctor today. Neither of them were in any rush to help me out. Hopefully, I can get one of them to call in a prescription tomorrow and then I won't have to miss any work.
We are in pseudo quarantine here. No one has actually told us we can't leave the house, but if germs are cooking in the girls or Dan and I....I don't really want to be spreading "the love" all around town. I've been using hand sanitizer likes in going out of style and spraying Lysol everywhere. I scoured the bathroom this morning with bleach. Hopefully, this virus will not linger in the Widener household.
Thank you for your prayers. Keep them coming.

Dear Stomach Flu.....
I realize that you think you're hot stuff by lurking in this house for days on end and infecting my children one by one. It was really rude to make Dan hold the bucket for Nathan...on Father's Day no less! But, I've got your number! I'm armed with more Lysol and anti bacterial soap than you can handle. You will NOT rule this house! After all, I have a sign that says "No Soliciting" on my door! Move along now!
Sincerely,
The Widener Family who has had ENOUGH!

I'll let you know
Well, Dan and I have been battling colds....although I had a fever last night and my throat is still pretty sore. It now seems to have moved to our chests. The kids seem ok for now.......I'll let you know if we start oinking.

What a week!
Last week was one of those weeks! You know the kind...where so much is going on that you aren't really sure what day it is. Here is the shake down:
1. First of all, about 10 days ago, I finally took the girls to the pediatrician. They both had fevers at one time or another that week and they both had developed a yukky cough. This cough seemed different to me and so, I wanted to have it checked out. Well, sure enough, it was bronchitis. Amelia had it worse than Olivia...but they were both prescribed antibiotics. When Amelia was 7 weeks old, she had a case of RSV and so whenever her chest becomes congested, I feel a lot better having it checked out. In this case, my "mama's intuition" was correct. They are both on the mend.
2. Last Sunday, Nathan woke up about 4am throwing up. Lovely!! I had really hoped we would finally be over these winter sicknesses! He threw up a couple of times but by noon, he was asking for food! At first, I only gave him toast to see how he kept it down...but by dinner time, he was HUNGRY! So, I made pancakes for dinner. He ate well and was feeling fine. I sent him to school on Monday.
3. Monday and Tuesday everybody was doing great. I had an appointment with the oncologist. I don't have to see him for 3 months! I will see him every three months for two years. Then I will graduate to every 4 months for 2 years....then every 6 months for two years...and then finally... once per year! For now, I don't see him until June so I've got three whole months where I don't need to think about cancer at all! It almost seems like a vacation! I'm so happy! Wednesday morning, Nathan woke up feeling sick again and threw up! Sigh....I kept him home from school. Again, he only threw up once and was asking for food by noon. This time...he got crackers and toast ONLY. He was fine by Thursday so he went to school.
4. Friday was the follow up appointment for the girls. They had completed their course of antibiotics and so the doctor wanted to listen to their lungs again. Amelia was totally fine, however, she said that Olivia had fluid in her ears and her chest was still rattling. She also had tons of gunk in her nose. The doctor said it was all part of the same infection (fluid in the lungs, nose and ears) so she prescribed a antihistamine to help with the extra mucous. Everybody was FINE!! Dan and I took the kids to the Knights of Columbus Friday Fish Fry for dinner. The kids are not big on the fried fish but they love the mac & cheese, cheese grits and hush puppies!! Their were other kids from church/school there, so they were more interested in playing than eating. Amelia complained of an ear ache though! I thought this was strange because the MD said that Olivia was the one with the fluid! Hmmm...interesting. Anyway...to make a long story short....Amelia came home complaining of her stomach....and then, of course, threw up! Sigh....
She only threw up the one time and tossed and turned most of the night. Dan had vomit duty as I had done it with Nathan...it was his turn.
5. This morning, we had a special birthday party to go to. It was held for the daughter of some very good friends. They had it at a place called Diamond D. Ranch. They had horseback riding, a petting zoo, and a great hay ride! I though that maybe I should stay home with Amelia. After all, I really didn't want her throwing up at the birthday party! But, she pitched a total FIT about the idea of her not going. You know, as a mom...you have to pick your battles! I chose not to fight this one. I packed a change of clothes for she and Olivia (I'm sure Olivia will be next with the vomiting), a bucket, paper towels and wipes. I figured I was covered if anybody decide to do the technicolor yawn in the car!
6. Everything went great! The party was so much fun! What a wonderful place for a party!! I will post some pictures some time this next week of our adventure today. The kids loved the horses and loved our hay ride and the petting zoo! Dan's mom went with us and I have to say it was one of the nicest days I've had in the last 9 months! I felt good and it was so great to be outside in the sun and the fresh air! The kids laughed and played (they didn't fight!!) and Dan & I were very laid back and just let them play without knit-picking every aspect of their behavior.
7. Tonight when we got home...they played outside some more, came in for a soup dinner, got into their jammies (sorry, I didn't feel like doing the bath thing tonight) and were in bed by 8:30pm. Dan and I watched Twilight tonight on Comcast On Demand and it was such a peaceful day. I was also able to watch some of the Pope's visit to Angola on EWTN while the soup was heating up. This was just one of those perfect days where you really couldn't have had it any better.
One of the other bad things that happened this week was that I forgot one of my best friend's birthday! **Cindy....I am so sorry! It isn't that I totally forgot...I new it was this week....I just got confused and thought the 19th was on Friday! I know it sounds like an excuse...but that's the truth, just ask Dan****
I also spent some time out on the 40 Days for Life site in front of the Planned Parenthood. What an experience. I didn't realize that at this particular PPH, they do abortions on Friday mornings. My time is Friday's from 7-8am. They have escorts out there for these women. It's a hard thing to do....watch these women getting ready to have an abortion. They ALL walk in with their heads down. Some don't look like they really want to be there. I wish I could personally talk to all of them....to offer them other real choices.
Posts for this next week will include pictures from our Diamond D Ranch birthday party and the Stations of the Cross that we did at our Altar Rosary Society meeting, as well as a visit we have planned for tomorrow from some great friends from Minnesota!!

Clearly...
....there is a virus living in this house somewhere and we need to have an exorcism! Amelia has been throwing up all day and writhing in pain with stomach cramps. I've been dealing with those same stomach cramps. I felt so bad earlier that I had to ask Dan not to go to work. Thank God he stayed home, because about 5:00pm or so, Nathan decided he was sick and began throwing up too. There is no way I could have been holding two buckets at the same time.
Olivia is pretty much over it...although she still has some diarrhea. Amelia finally fell asleep about midnight and she's sleeping pretty good. Nathan and I are still up.....very miserable and just trying to distract ourselves.
Even before this latest outbreak, I had hired a team from the Maid Brigade to come next Tuesday the 13th to do what they call a "Seasonal Deep Cleaning". I have added several duties to this list. Apparently they work in pairs of two or three and after answering several questions about square footage, pets and stuff like that....she came up with a very reasonable price. So the germ exorcism will begin next Tuesday!!!
I did manage to take a picture of my two sickies.....against their will...but isn't that what moms do?

If this isn't one pitiful little girl!!
This is my brave 8 year old....even in illness he is somewhat shy! How about a collective "ahhhhhhhhhh"!

We're dropping....
.....like flies around here!! While Olivia is feeling better, Amelia has been acting very strange for the past two days. Very cranky and overly emotional. Today, she hasn't eaten anything and finally began complaining about her stomach about an hour ago. I tucked her into her bed (with the bucket very near) and walked out of the room. Exactly two minutes later...she is out cold! For her to be sleeping in the middle of the day....she's clearly sick. I'm not feeling so hot myself in the stomach department (so what else is new??).
I had only a few things on my list today...and I'm pretty sure not many of them are going to get done today. But, just in case you were interested...here's the list:
1. Put away laundered and folded clothes that my mother-in-law washed and brought back to us LAST WEEK!!!!! They are still in the baskets in our living room.
2. Change all the beds
3. Start laundry
4. Clean kitchen
5. Vacuum living room
Now, that's not really a huge list. I've decided that from now on, I'm going to make my expectations of myself more reasonable....doable. I'm tired of making lists a mile long knowing all along that I'll never get to everything. I just feel defeated that way.
The kids go back to school tomorrow. At least that is the plan. I will give myself tomorrow to also work on this list. It's easier now that all of the Christmas ornaments are packed away for next year.
While sitting on my rump this weekend, I started reading the book "Twilight" by Stephanie Meyer. I was mostly interested in seeing what all the fuss was about. I'm within a few pages of finishing it (I will finish it today) and I'm not all that impressed. I think I heard that this book was written for teenagers. I will agree that there is no bad language, no murder, no sex.....it is still very suggestive, sensual and pretty "adult" in subject matter. It's about a 17 year old girl.....and that is about the age I think it's appropriate for. I wouldn't let my children (if they were younger than 17) read it. I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie. I will more than likely continue on with the next book in the series, "New Moon".
If any of you have read the books or seen the movie, I'd love to know what you think.

Deja Vu???
Well, here I am, it's 1:36am and Olivia is sick. She's thrown up twice now. I have the couch covered in blankets and she has two buckets next to her. I asked Daniel to help me this time....I'm having a hard time sleeping and I'm just exhausted! My oncologist gave me something to help me sleep, but, I've only taken it once. Dan just told me to take one and go to bed as he will stay up with Olivia tonight.
I looked it up...there is a patron saint of stomach problems...get this....it's St. Elmo! This must be where St. Elmo's "fire" comes from.
Ooops...that makes three times!
St. Elmo...pray for us!!!

Can you say "relapse"???
So, I was minding my own business at 3:09am this morning...doing what most, a lot, some people do at that hour...sleeping, when I was awakened by a small child with a tummy ache. However, this time I was armed and ready. Before we passed go or collected $200...we headed straight for the cupboard where Mr. Bucket lives. Thankfully, we were just in time!
Dear husband woke up to all the commotion, apparently surveyed the situation and felt all was in competent hands and then....promptly turned over!
So, here I sit at 3:58am, with two buckets...two washcloths, my computer and an "on-demand" episode of Dragon Tales for my poor relapsed Amelia.
As I sit and contemplate what kind of week this will most likely be....I will pray a rosary for my sweet little girl, for all those that have asked me to pray for them, for all my blogging friends...and...for all those that will find out they have breast cancer today.

Keeping afloat and asking for prayers...
I'm just trying to keep my head above water today. I completed my last chemotherapy session on Monday. I had about a good 24 hours where I felt relatively normal....not anymore. The symptoms have begun again and I'm just trying to go with the flow. I'm hoping that knowing this was my last time, will help to deal with the side effects better.
In addition, the school called this morning to tell me that Amelia wasn't feeling well. She doesn't have a fever but seems pretty pale and is complaining of her stomach hurting. I put her on the couch when I got home and she immediately fell asleep. I have a bucket on stand by in case.
I'm now carrying around the hand sanitizer and wearing a mask. This is NOT a good time for me to be exposed to a stomach virus!
****Update: Just as I finished this post earlier...Amelia threw up...all over herself, the blanket and the couch! Amazingly, the bucket remained squeaky clean! Sigh.....
While I know this will be an interesting week here at hour house...I'm not in the slightest bit worried about it. I have a warm home with a loving family....it's Advent and we are eagerly expecting Christ's arrival....we will get through it all...together!!
**Could I also ask you to keep a special person in your prayers today? A blog friend has a family member having surgery today...If you have a minute to say a quick Hail Mary for her speedy recovery and ultimate healing, I'm sure that she and her family will be extremely grateful****

Just when you think you have things....
figured out...the rules change. I woke up this morning at about 3:30am...coughing. It's that really loose, cruddy cough that really hurts. By 5am, my head was pounding and my throat was so sore I could barely swallow. I called the MD early but they didn't get back to me until this afternoon. I'm on a Z-Pak now with some over the counter cough medicine. I'm just supposed to watch for a developing fever.
We had some very wonderful members of our Engaged Encounter group bring us dinner tonight! What a blessing! I'm not sure I could have tackled that today. It was hot baked ziti with a huge loaf of french bread as well as a big salad. Ice cream and cupcakes for dessert! Dan came home between jobs so he could pick up my prescriptions and help me get dinner on the table. Normally, I would have asked him to stay home from work tonight to help me, but, I'm going to try to eek out some help from my 8 year old. It's 5:55pm here and all of them are bathed up and in their pjs.....the girls are watching an episode of Clifford and Nathan is sitting quietly on the couch reading...."Children of the Civil War" by Candice F. Ransom. I'm tickled to death that he is reading this book. Normally, he'd have a stack of dinosaur or Pokemon books, which, are ok but I'm just glad to see him interested in history.
I hope to be feeling human sometime soon. I can't really tell which symptoms are from the chemo and which are from the upper respiratory infection. Suffice it to say that everything hurts, everything is sore, and I'm hanging on by a thread.
O, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.
