I can't seem to get ahead. Seriously.
Every single time I turn around, I get hit in the gut! Here's what I mean....
1. For starters, school is kicking my hiney!! I pick the kids up after school, we get a snack and then we sit down and do homework. This year, I have all three of them with homework! Amelia requires my constant attention. She can't work on her own. I'm going back and forth between the two girls trying to keep them focused. Nathan is pretty much on his own this year, but, he routinely asks for my help too. I may or may not get dinner on the table. Truthfully, we've not been eating very healthy lately. I've used the slow cooker several times, but mostly, we're eating leftovers or something fast. By the time I can finally breathe (after homework, dinner, dishes, baths and bedtime), I'm usually still wearing my I.D. badge from work! Although I'm often thinking about my online friends, I don't have much time to post. When I sit down at the computer, I check my email, check Facebook and try to read my favorite blogs. If I do get around to composing a post, I fall asleep. Two weeks ago, I woke up at 5:30am with my laptop still on my lap, and the light still on!
2. I'm itching to get my OAMC done! However, in order to do it, I need to do a large shopping trip....which we can't afford right now. The alternator belt broke on the truck....$200. The dryer died....$150 for a used one. There went half the grocery budget for the month!
3. I finally bought the last of the supplies I need for my Home Management Binder! This I will complete soon. I'm so glad! I'll feel much better when this is all done. The only thing that I might change is the color of the letters for my front cover. I bought black, but I think I should go with a different color. Pictures to follow!
4. Amelia is struggling in school right now. It's a continuation of the problems we had last year. I'm sorry I can't elaborate more right now...I'm just too emotional about it.
5. I see my oncologist on Thursday. This always makes me crazy.
6. I'm devastated by what has happened with Fr. Groeschel. I guess people are never allowed to misspeak or make a mistake. This man has lived his entire life in the service of others and no one will ever remember that now. They'll only remember these last words. It's a shame.
It just seems like when I take a step forward, it ends up being two steps back! The wind has been taken out of my sails several times over the last few weeks. I'm doing my best to keep going though.
I think I need a vacation!

What I've been doing.....
I know there has been another (yawn) long pause in my posting. Trust me, it's not for a lack of wanting to post! It's simply because there just isn't enough hours in the day! But, just to keep you interested (for those that still read this little blog), here are the posts I'm working on....

- I AM still planning a Once-A-Month cooking day! I have moved on from the planning stages and I have selected my menu. This whole issue was delayed because our fridge broke down a few weeks ago. Apparently, I'm not having much luck these days with appliances. I will post my menu plans this week!
- Back to School pictures. We're now two weeks into the new school year and I have yet to post any pictures on my blog. I will be sharing those this week too.
- My trip to Atlanta to visit my good friend Monsignor Steven Lopes! We had a wonderful time and I have pictures from that to share also.
- My home management binder is moving right along. I found Amelia's baptismal certificate yesterday (I didn't even know that it was lost) while looking in her memory box for some pictures. I will get another installment on my progress posted soon!
- Deals, deals, deals! I have found some wonderful shopping deals lately! I'm so excited about them that I will do an entire post with pictures!
- I've decided to make my Christmas cards this year! Quite an endeavor if you ask me! I'm not sure I will save much money doing this, though. I thought it would be cheaper because I had a boat load of Nativity holy cards on hand...but as it turns out...buying the paper, envelopes, stamps, ink and scrapbook paper was a little pricey. We won't even go into the amount we'll pay in postage....but I'll save that for my actual post!

Two things.....
First....
Are you aware that the "rapture" is supposed to happen this Saturday? Apparently, the whole entire world has been notified that we should all be "wrapping up any loose ends" and saying our good-byes. For those of you who plan to be raptured....we'll miss you. For the rest of you, I'll see you Sunday!
And second....
Fox has picked up a new show set to premiere in January called "Alcatraz". This is another time-travelling show produced by JJ Abrams (of LOST fame) and features one of my favorite people....also from LOST....Jorge Garcia (Hurley)! I must admit, I'm a little excited about this. It seems that television has absolutely no appeal to me since I don't get to see Sawyer every week. With JJ Abrams writing/producing and Jorge acting....there is hope for a decent show!

Stopping In...
I thought I would stop by and say hello as it's been over a week since I've been here. So, "hello"!
For the last several years, trying to get myself focused for Lent has really been a challenge. I can tell you without a doubt that stepping back from the computer has been a big help! However, I sure miss it!
Since I'm on my lunch break at work, I thought I might take a few minutes to quickly update you on some of the things going on around here.....
1. My trip to Rome is in 15 days! I'm excited yet a little apprehensive. It's always hard to be away from my family for any reason, but to be so far away can make it harder since if something went wrong, I could not get home quickly. In addition, I'm a nervous flyer and when I say nervous.....I mean NERVOUS! Just ask my husband or anybody that has ever flown with me.
I'm all packed and ready to go although the special SIM card for my cell phone has not yet arrived (sigh)! I need to make sure the laundry is caught up and the grocery shopping has been done so that Dan and the kids can move through the week with ease. I also need to write down lesson plans so there are no arguments about school work!
2. Nathan's bird laid an egg last night! (Although, it is my understanding that eggs are now called "spheres" in certain parts of the world! Sheesh!) The darn bird has been shredding her newspaper bedding for over a month! Nesting is a messy business! Thankfully, she should get back to her normal routine now....until the next time! The kids were so excited thinking that there would be a baby bird soon. I had to break it to them that in order to have a baby bird you need a mommy bird and a daddy bird....and we only have a mommy bird. Nathan and Amelia were satisfied with that answer....not Amelia! She wanted to know WHY there needed to be a daddy bird too! It was not a good day for thinking fast.....so I just said, "well, don't YOU have a mommy and a daddy?" She stopped, cocked her head a minute and said..."yep" and ran off! I dodged another one!
3. Speaking of Amelia, I caught her 'kissing the wall" the other night! Horrified, I asked her what in the heck she was doing! She informed me that she was practicing for when she falls into a deep sleep and Prince Charming kisses her to wake her up! When I lifted myself off of the floor.....I swore off all future princess movies from Disney!
4. Even though we are technically behind in our school work (week 22, if you were wondering) the kids are doing really well and we've finally made it into a good routine. The sad part is that now I'm freaking out about whether or not they are going to be prepared to go back to school next year. The school sent an email yesterday saying that Nathan and Amelia will have "assessment testing" during the week I am in Rome. I know it's a little crazy for me to be so worried about it....but I admit to having a pride issue!
Maybe I could use a few more weeks of Lent!

Gas Prices
I'm sure this is happening all over the country but I had to post about what I've seen over the last 4 days here in Jacksonville. This is the price fluctuation for one gas station in our area for unleaded.
Monday: $3.31 per gallon
Tuesday: $3.39 per gallon
Wednesday: $3.45 per gallon
Thursday: $3.49 per gallon
That's 18 cents in FOUR DAYS! Libya produces less than 2% of the worlds supply and all of that goes to China and Europe. Why oh why can't we just drill for our own oil?

Nostalgia
I lost my prescription sun glasses. Fiddlesticks! I've looked everywhere. I either left them somewhere or they must have fallen out of my suitcase purse that doesn't close properly. Darn it! However, while looking for them, I found a small square Christmas tin in the right hand side of my top dresser drawer that I've had for over 30 years! It's been almost 10 years since I've even looked inside! It holds ticket stubs to all of the special events I've been to! It was so much fun to look through the contents and reminisce about times gone by! I thought I would post about all those concerts and football games I've been to over the years....as long as you promise not to laugh (especially at the very first concert I ever attended)!! My preference in music is, shall we say, diverse! Please try not to judge me based on what you're about to read! Just remember....I was born and raised on the LEFT coast....if you know what I mean! Some of these tickets are falling apart or are so faded that I can barely read them. I'm posting this here while I can still remember!

Apparently, in my early adulthood, this is what I spent all my money on! I was single for a long time (met Dan at age 32) and so, I guess this was just a way to keep busy and to socialize with my friends. It's funny how this all seems so trivial now. As you can see, I haven't been to a concert in almost 9 years! This coincides with having children and having new and more important priorities.

Mother and Father are OUT!! (***warning: non child friendly post!)
It seems that the United States government (the passport office, anyway) has decided that it is no longer correct to refer to the 2 (male and female!) human beings that cooperated with God to bring you into existence, as "mother" and "father". Unfortunately, if you have children and are applying for a U.S. passport, you will now be referred to as "Parent 1" and Parent 2". This is according to the Family Equality Council (whatever THAT is)!

A statement on the State Department website noted: "These improvements are being made to provide a gender neutral description of a child's parents and in recognition of different types of families".
I have a few questions though......would I be considered "parent 1" or "parent 2" and does this mean you could feasibly have "parent 3" or "parent 4" or more? How about "mommy 1" and "mommy 2" or "daddy 1" and "daddy 2"? Isn't that even MORE politically correct?
What is with this "gender neutral" stuff? The world is trying to go neutral! Educational neutrality is when you can't use a RED pen to correct a student's work because it might make them feel bad. Athletic neutrality is when you no longer keep score in school sports because you don't want anyone to LOSE and when you can no longer play dodge ball because everyone picks on the weakest one inside the circle. Sigh!
This is all really getting to me these days. If it's not one thing, it's another. I'm so tired of it all. Times are getting tough and I truly feel sorry for my children and their children...and so on for all of this that they will have to endure.

Commercials, magazine ads, billboards, radio spots......all in a ploy to get young girls (as young as NINE) "vaccinated" against a disease that is spread through sexual contact.....and what do we have to show for it......lies, lies and more lies...as well as 44 reported deaths, 15,037 adverse reactions (including Guilliane Barre, lupus, seizures, paralysis, blood clots, brain inflammation and many others), NO efficacy trials in girls under the age of 15, and the knowledge that Gardasil has done absolutely NOTHING to protect the health of young American women.

You would not believe the heated discussions I was involved in when this vaccine first came out! However, I was seen as the "crazy Catholic" lady that wanted every woman to either get cervical cancer and die or become pregnant so that we can further the agenda of Catholics in the world! No! I'm not kidding! People actually implied that I had a secret wish for young women to get cancer because I was against this vaccine! Seriously!
These very same people have NO PROBLEM taking oral contraception that is KNOWN to increase the risk for breast and CERVICAL cancer (the non sexual contact kind) as well as things like....headaches, dizziness, nausea, lightheadedness, bloating, stomach upset, depression, groin & calf pain, chest pain, lumpy breasts, weakness, tingling in the arms and legs, shortness of breath, yellowing of the eyes and skin! The list goes on and on!
Would it be wrong just to simply say...I told you so?

Welcome, 2011!
We got a call from one of the basketball coaches at our parish school tonight. Apparently, they are one kid short for one of the teams and he wanted to know if Nathan would be interested in playing. We made the decision to go ahead and say yes, even though he just finished up with soccer. One of the reasons is that we really LOVE this coach and I was so touched that he wanted Nathan on his team! The practices are reasonable...just once a week and the games are all on Saturdays.
During this Christmas break, I've learned that two of my elementary school classmates have been diagnosed with cancer. One with testicular cancer and another with stage 4 Melanoma (brain tumor). When does this ever end? It seems that every time I turn around, I hear of someone else who has been stricken with this disease. It's heart wrenching! In addition to all of that, my nephew is back in the hospital again. He is suffering with ulcerative colitis/Crohns disease. I can't even keep count of how many flare ups he's had in the last year. I would say that this is at least his 4th hospitalization in the past 12 months! Please keep him in your prayers.
There is also another very close family member that is suffering with fibromyalgia. Recently, her doctors have decided to do some additional testing as her symptoms seem to be more indicative of M.S. She will undergo a spinal tap sometime in the next 2 weeks. Apparently this will be the deciding factor in her diagnosis. I also ask that you would keep her in your prayers as well!
We managed to get all of our Christmas decorations down and put away this afternoon. This was bittersweet for me. I have a love/hate relationship with holiday decorations! The living room looks so bare now! However, if 2011 is anything like 2010, Christmas will be here again before we know it!
Well, that's my quick update for now. It shouldn't be too long before I'm back into the routine again.

Dislike
I really dislike it when you take the time to iron your work clothes for the next day and neatly lay them out over the ironing board and then wake up in the morning to find that your cat decided your BLACK shirt was the most optimal place in the house to get a good nights sleep!!! Then, of course, your BLACK shirt has turned into a furry blanket and not really appropriate for business attire!. Sigh......

Out of the mouths of babes!
The kids and I were sitting in our living room the other night, admiring the Christmas tree. I was (once again) verbalizing how much easier an artificial tree is compared to a fresh one. Everyone agreed that this was the right thing to do this year! Olivia delivered the best line of the night......
"Mom, a fake tree is good 'cause then we don't have to worry about it burning our house down because it is fire retarded"!

So busy.
It's very busy here in our house preparing for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I've been asked to make a "squash casserole" as part of my contribution to our family meal on Thursday. I've never made one before and I have been scouring the internet trying to find the right recipe. A friend has agreed to share her family recipe with me as long as I swear on the life of my first born child that I won't share it! That's a tall order....and I do love my first born very much....so I guess I'll have to comply with her wishes.
In other news, I had some more dental work done last week. Yuk! I hate the dentist. I hate everything about the dentist. In this case, I had two very old (like...over 20 years) crowns that decided to crumble at just about the same time. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough of either the crown or the post left to save. The only option was to pull the teeth. Unfortunately, I had two teeth pulled on Wednesday. It didn't take long and I wasn't in too much discomfort at the time. Since then, the one on the left is giving me some trouble....much, much, much too sore. The one on the right seems to be healing fine. To top it all off...one of the them was right in front...which means I either look like Granny from Beverly Hillbillies....or I have to wear something that they call a "flipper". It reminds me of the "retainer" I wore after my braces were removed when I was in the 5th grade. Anyway, the left side is causing a lot of paid in the surrounding gum, the sinuses, and the side of my face. This, in turn, has created a headache that just doesn't want to go away. I've been slugging prescription grade ibuprofen every six to eight hours just to be able to function! I wonder what my liver looks like right now? No...never mind, I don't want to know!
The Christmas Trees have arrived at our parish! Our Men's Club sells Christmas Trees as a fundraiser every year. These are very special trees as Father blesses every single on of them personally! They were supposed to come yesterday afternoon but the truck bringing them from North Carolina was delayed and they didn't get here until almost 1:00am. Dan was on the list for helping to unload them...consequently, he will be sleeping in this morning! Helping out at the tree lot is a very enjoyable tradition in our family. The kids play, the adults talk, we roast marshmallows and pray the Rosary! I love this time of year!
School is on hold for the rest of this week. To be honest, we haven't gotten much done over the last two weeks. My new schedule of Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues is not really working. We're going to have to try something else. I'm changing the schedule up a bit and I'll keep you posted on the progress. Incidentally, Amelia got 100% on her very first spelling test! I'm very proud of how well she is doing in school. This is so cool for me to see! I see her learning and growing right before my eyes and I'm in awe. She's very bright and I'm a proud Mama!
I have a special prayer request of you, my friends. A close friend of ours was recently diagnosed with Large Cell Lymphoma. I don't know all the specifics, but I do know that surgery to remove the tumor is not an option. I am not sure if the decision was made for traditional/conventional treatment or not (there was some talk of going the more natural way), but whatever decision he and his wife make....I want them to be covered in prayer! Please add PR & DR to your prayer list! Thank you so much.

A Question For You!
The author of one of my very favorite blogs has recently asked an interesting question, "What does 'when the well runs dry' mean to you, and what do you do about it?" I've been pondering these questions for the last few days and what I've found is that, I don't really have a definitive answer. I've decided that I'm "wishy-washy"! Does that make sense?
I'll start off by saying that I don't remember how old I was the first time I heard this term. I'm pretty sure I was in grade school though because I know I was asking my dad for something. It was probably some new item that I'd seen advertised on television. I remember that he clearly said to me, "Nancy honey, I'd love to give that to you but I'm sorry to say that our well has run dry." I took that to mean that we didn't have the money, that our bank account was dry, that it was empty. At the time, there wasn't much for me to actually do about it, accept to say that I shrugged my shoulders and moved on to the next thing clogging my prepubescent mind. I guess you could call it, acceptance, mostly because....you just didn't argue with my dad!
Another way of looking at it, and this is where I think I most identify with the term, is to say that emotionally, my well has run dry. I am emotionally spent. As a woman (more specifically a wife and a mother), my vocation is to be the primary nurturer. We are programmed to work towards meeting the needs of others. Sometimes those needs can be overwhelming. Whether it's meeting the needs of my husband, my children, the household or even extended family, it can take it's toll on my emotions. For me, I know I'm at that point when I cry. When I allow my emotions to get to the point where I have nothing left of me to give and all I can do is shed tears, then I know that I'm at my wits end and I need to take a step back and re-group. For me, it usually means taking a trip to a quiet bookstore or just a drive around town..ALONE....just God and I. Just this simple step alone can begin to refill my well.
My well can also run dry spiritually. I know you've heard the term "desert experience", right? To have my well run dry in this context is probably harder than any of the others. Feeling separated or abandoned by God is never a pleasant experience. Whenever I am in the midst of this crisis, I often wonder what it was that I did (or didn't do) to push God away. Did the spiritual dryness come because I didn't have enough faith? Will God bring me back into His fold again or will I have to endure the fire of refinement forever?
During these times of spiritual dryness, I lay low. I don't do anything drastic. I usually seek the advice of a trusted priest and then, well, I just simply pray. Even though sometimes it seems as though God doesn't hear me in the desert, I pray anyway. I pray that I'm open to whatever it is that He's trying to show me. I take advantage of the Sacraments and keep a rosary with me at all times....even if all I do is just hold it! Sometimes, I'll even sleep with it!
Strangely enough, my emotional well is pretty dry right at the moment. I'm sorry if this post seems superficial and impersonal, but, I'm having trouble digging deep these days. Right now I seem to be just going through the motions. I have a lot going on. Please bear with me as I "fill up my well".

Voting Day
We're delaying lessons this morning because it's primary day here in Florida! I'm taking all three kids to the voting booth with me. I figured that this is one of those advantages of homeshooling where we can be flexible and turn ordinary events of life into educational moments.
We also have a homeschooling event to attend at a local Barnes and Noble. This particular store is celebrating the opening of a new department called Barnes & Noble at School! They are featuring lots of products for teachers, parents, homeschoolers and students. They also plan to have a special back-to-school story time in their Children's Department.

Poor Martha!
Our Parish offers "Children's Liturgy" during the 10am Sunday mass. The kids seem to enjoy it, although sometimes, the girls are a little shy and stay with Dan and I. When they do go, they bring back their study sheets featuring the readings from that day. The above picture is the study sheet from this past Sunday. I was speechless when Nathan showed this to me!
Tell me honestly, have you ever seen anything like this before? I mean, were YOU aware that Martha was on the, um, well....chunky side? I also had no idea that Mary was....uh...somewhat manly looking.
Where in the heck have I been that I didn't know this? I guess I always just assumed that Martha would be in shape...with all that work and everything! Do you think they had something like Weight Watchers back then?

Some words of wisdom......
Next time you go to the grocery store and buy a bag of beautiful, shiny, plump, juicy, fresh cherries......put the bag in the TRUNK for the ride home....NOT the seat beside you! This way, you will actually have some cherries to bring home to your family.....instead of bag full of stems and pits!
