How about some truth.....for a change!

"No one can live continually in sin and continue to say the Rosary: either they will give up sin or they will give up the Rosary" -Bishop Hugh Doyle

As a disclaimer I have to say I don't know the context of Bishop Doyle's quote, but it seems a little too 'pat' for my taste. I wanted to say I'm on the fence on this one but I don't think I am. I think I do in fact disagree with it, on the premise that we all live continually in sin. It's around us and it's inherent in us. It's unavoidable. In my case, I've been faithful to the Rosary in my life, and I've been unfaithful to it, too. Sometimes my 'unfaithfulness' was due to other just priorities. But no matter what, I was in a place and state of sin all the while. The difference would seem to be not that I was or wasn't continually in sin but that I cooperated with the sin to varying degrees. Does this make sense?

p.s.
I should add this. The Rosary became essential to me. Period. A lifeline of sorts. But that's just me. I don't believe it is meant for everyone. And it's not even meant for me perpetually though I believed otherwise in the past. We each have individual and unique affinities and devotionals, gloriously built into us, on purpose, which we must be true to, as well as duties of state we must be true to. For instance, if I have only time left in a day to get the laundry folded or grade papers, well, I must do that for my family or students and for my Lord by devotion. Time spent on the Rosary in that case would be a mistake, or the sin even if you like.

This isn't a soapbox deal! I'm just longwinded as you know :).

Wishing you joy today, with love

Nancy,
Yes, somehow I noticed the Rosary does that. It gives a person a repulsion for sin - at least it does for me!

Esther...I agree!

Aspiring....I agree with you, at least the part about how all of us live continually in sin....even with the Rosary. What the quote said to me...is that if we pray the Rosary (that is to say, reflecting on the life of Jesus) and we have a true devotion to it....we will never be comfortable in that sin...EVER. For me (like Mary333), the Rosary helps me to see my sin so much clearer and I am burdened by it more. It's almost as though the Rosary points my sin out to me....in a way that make me more and more repulsed by it.
When I neglet the devotion of the Rosary....I do not see my sin reflected back to me as clearly. It's almost like I don't even notice it at all.
I also agree that as true followers of Christ...all that we do can be a prayer or devotion to HIM...if we let it. But, I also know that I can say a decade of the rosary while folding clothes if I so choose. I certainly wish I did that more! Thank you, Aspiring! I'm glad you visited today!

Gardenia...Welcome! I've visited your blog many times! You're daughter is a cutie!

Mary333....Repulsion was a good way to describe it!

Are you interested in a True Story? Following a natural disaster, without my belongings, and busy beyond busy recovering - in the shower is where I prayed the Rosary, using the shower curtain rings like an abacus for my counting :) ! Great topic and thoughts and dialog, Nancy. Btw, my dh was in Jax the past two days. I couldn't go :( !
